Alternative therapies

Some alternative therapies might benefit people with dementia. They work by treating the conditions related to dementia, such as sleep problems or agitation.

The use of lemon balm may improve cognition and mood in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, and lavender oil may reduce occurrences of aggressive behaviour in dementia.

Current findings indicate that bright light therapy may benefit people with dementia, but further research is needed. Learn more about this alternative therapy.

Some studies have that found taking cannabis could help to manage some behavioural symptoms of dementia. However, there is currently no evidence that cannabis can help to prevent the disease.

There have been some claims that coconut oil could be used as a treatment, or even a cure, for Alzheimer’s disease. However, there is currently not enough experimental evidence to back up these claims.
